Case study

    May 2025
  • Category:
    Calculation of award

Example

C applied for a crisis grant for food after receiving a reduced benefit payment and spending their income.

The council awarded C £120.28 to cover their food costs for 31 days. C said this did not meet their needs due to their health conditions. At first tier review, the council assessed that the original amount awarded was sufficient for C's needs.

We reviewed the council's file and spoke with C. We assessed that due to C's physical health conditions impacting on their ability to cook, they relied on ready meals and takeaways. We changed the council's decision based on this and made a further award to C.

Recommendations

  • Award a further £56.73 to cover C's additional food needs until their next Universal Credit payment date.

Feedback for the council

  • They did not take into account C's circumstances and ensure the award made met their needs in line with section 7.24 of the guidance.

We have asked the council to provide us with confirmation that the award was made within one working day.
