Example
C applied for a community care grant to set up their new tenancy. They were keen to move due to relationship breakdowns within the family as well as having their own mental and physical health issues.
The council declined the application because C's circumstances did not match any of the qualifying criteria for a grant.
We reviewed the council's file and spoke with C. They shared details about the breakdown of close family relationships, which had significantly impacted their mental health. C also disclosed that they are living with substantial physical limitations due to a chronic spinal condition.
Based on this information, we were satisfied that C met the eligibility criteria for a grant and was experiencing exceptional pressure. We changed the council’s decision and awarded a number of the requested household items.
Recommendations
- Award C a washing machine, kitchen and bathroom vinyl, a home starter pack and a wardrobe.
Feedback for the council
- The council did not make sufficient follow-up enquiries based on the information provided on the application about the applicant’s circumstances.
We have asked the council to provide us with confirmation that the award was made within one working day.
